A Tempophon similar to the one used at the Workshop

The Tempophon is “a device with rotating heads that could change the pitch of a sound without modifying its tempo.”[1]

Also known as the 'Springer machine', it was released in Germany in 1955 and was a tape machine add-on allowing independent time and pitch changes on analog tape via a rotating head block and electro-mechanical sound granulation.[2][3]

The drum at the centre contains the rotating heads. The pitch control is marked in musical intervals[4], it has a bandwith from 50 to 18000 Hz and works with 6 mm [¼ inch] tapes.[5]
